Mont Rouge is rich in iron oxide which gives it its distinctive red hue and has a high alkalinity of 9.2ph, it holds a strong negative ionic charge that allows it to absorb and draw toxins from the body. What it is

This 100% natural clay from Sardinia is rich in iron oxide, which gives it its distinctive red colour. It is known as a Montmorillonite clay and formed over millennia from deposits of volcanic ash, minerals, and weathering. Hydro-thermal exposures over thousands of years imbued the clay with dynamic properties, including its negative ionic charge that absorbs toxins, and crystallisation, which resulted in the clay’s tiny particles. Red Montmorillonite clay is known as a ‘living clay’ because its mineral content can help increase enzyme production and is used worldwide in treatments for both humans and animals. Since time immemorial, the clay has been used to treat open wounds and intestinal illness and discomfort.

Why it works

Montmorillonite clay is in the smectite group of clays, which have the potential to absorb impurities, including bacteria. This capacity makes the clay excellent as a cleanser and detoxifier. The clay’s tiny particles hold a strong negative ionic charge, which draws positively charged impurities into it. When the clay is applied as a facemask or in a body-wrap, it will draw toxins out of the skin and absorb them, leaving the skin cleansed and revitalised when the clay is washed off. Its action also boosts blood flow to the epidermis, improving the transportation of oxygen and nutrients to skin cells.

Minerals within the clay include calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, manganese, and silica as well as trace elements of others. The skin benefits from these minerals in numerous ways, not least because minerals carry the electrical charge in the cells that enable hormones, vitamins, and enzymes to function properly.

Used in a face-mask or body wrap, the clay will absorb excess oil, as well as boost circulation.

How to use

All Skin types

Use wooden, ceramic or glass bowl and a wooden spoon for mixing.
(IMPORTANT, all items should be non-metallic)

Mix one tablespoon of clay with one tablespoon of water to make a smooth paste. General rule is equal parts of clay to water.

Every clay has its own character and qualities. If the mixture is too thin, add more clay, if too thick, add more water.

Hydrate clay with water. Using spring water, floral hydrosol or pure oil and mix into a creamy consistency.

For best results steam clean the face to open pores before applying Leave clay on for approximately 10 minutes. Less time for dry skin and more time for oily skin.

Rinse off with lukewarm water and pat dry. Spray with floral hydrosol and use oil or moisturiser to finish.

We recommend using 2-3 times a week if you have oily skin and 1-2 times a week for everyone else.

Store in cool dry place, use within 2 years of opening

Face Mask: For best results use a brush to evenly cover all the skin on your face, forehead, including around and under the nose, and upper part of the neck avoiding the eye area. Apply a medium to thick layer.
Leave on to dry to allow full absorption of clay minerals, and extraction of any impurities.

Dry Skin Treatment: To the mixture add a few drops of natural oil, apply the paste on the dry areas, knees, elbows, heels. Leave it on for 10-20 mins. The clay can be applied anywhere on your body to combat dryness and flaking and instantly soften and moisturize the skin.

Body Mask: Apply mixture to the body, leave for 15-20 mins.

Can I use a clay mask if I have dry skin?

Clay masks are effective for removing and absorbing impurities from your skin. Just because you have dry skin doesn’t mean your skin doesn’t need a thorough cleansing. For dry skin, choose a clay like Kaolin Blanche or Lava Nude clay, that has smaller expansion capabilities. Add oils to your clay mask to add a moisturizing agent. With dry skin, don’t leave the clay mask on for as long. Follow guidelines for the clays.

Can you use a clay mask every day?

Depends on the type of clay. You can use kaolin clay every day, even as your cleanser. However, you should use the other clays for face or body masks 1-2 times a week on normal to oily skin, excessively oily skin, use 3 times week.
